Connection to the Internet
Normally, dial-up access is used to connect to the Internet at home or office. Following things are required to establish connection to Internet:
* Computer – Any computer can be used for connection to Internet.
* Modem – Modem is an electronic device that is used to transfer data over Internet. It links the computer with the Internet using telephone line.
* Dialup Software – Dialup software is used to establish a connection between a personal computer and a server of an ISP.
* ISP Connection – ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. I t provides the link between the computer and the Internet. A person has to get an account of an ISP for establishing a connection to Internet.
* Web Browser – Finally, an Internet browser is required. Browser is software that is used to view web pages. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator are popular web browsers.
More high-speed connections are also available to connect to the Internet such as DSL, ISDN and cable television Internet services. DSL stands for digital subscriber line and ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network. These technologies provide high-speed connections through cable television network.

Addressing Scheme

IP Addressing
IP address is a unique number that refers to a computer connected to the Internet. IP stands for Internet Protocol. This address is a 32-bit number. It consists of four numbers separated by period. Each number is between 0 and 255. These numbers are known as octets.
An example of IP address is 127.80.144.30. Normally, first number indicates a network and that last number indicates a specific computer.
A server on the Internet has a static IP address. It does not change very often. When a computer connects to the Internet, It also gets in IP address by the ISP. This IP address is used only during the session and is not static.
DNS Addressing
IP address is difficult to remember for the users. An alternative to IP address is known as domain name. a domain name consists of text instead of number. It is easier to remember a domain name than IP address. A domain name is associated with one or more IP addresses.
Each domain name has a top-level domain that indicates the type of organization associated with domain name. The domain names outside United States also include the country code. The country code of Pakistan is pk e.g. www.hec.gov.pk
Internet Corporation for Assigned Name and Numbers (ICANN) is a group that assigns and controls the top-level domains.
A method used to store domain names and corresponding IP addresses is called domain name system (DNS). When the user specifies a domain name, DNS server converts it into its corresponding IP address.

How To Speed Up your BroadBand Speed

Setting DNS For Your Connection
One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount of time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here is a simple solution to significantly speed up your DNS resolution.
Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.
This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.
Note: The service is provided by OpenDNS.
Saving your Bandwidth
Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

Google Image Search could be used in many ways.

Mencegah Virus dengan Deep freeze
Komputer anda terkena virus? program terhapus secara tidak sengaja? komputer mendadak hang setelah anda install sesuatu? Kalau anda memakai Deep Freeze, hal ini akan bisa cegah...
Untuk memakai Deep Freeze sebaiknya komputer anda dibagi menjadi setidaknya 2 partisi yaitu partisi "master" untuk instalasi sistem OS komputer seperti Windows, yang kedua partisi "secondary" untuk data, installer maupun backup. Ada beberapa orang yang memakai software ini membagi partisinya hingga 3 sampai 4 untuk data/installer/backup. Saya sarankan kalau komputer anda mempunyai memori besar dan harddisk yang aksesnya cepat (SATA setidaknya) baru boleh melakukannya karena sistem komputer akan menjadi lambat terutama ketika loading.
Yang anda pakai untuk Deep Freeze hanya partisi sistem anda saja atau partisi "master" karena partisi ini yang paling banyak diserang oleh virus atau mengalami masalah dengan OS ketika startup. Untuk partisi data sebaiknya tidak perlu dipasang Deep Freeze karena anda tidak ingin ketika komputer anda restart data anda hilang atau kembali ke posisi semula sebelum terjadi perubahan. Kalau komputer anda singel partition (hanya ada "C" saja tidak ada "D", dimana "D" bukan CD/DVD-ROM atau RW), sebaiknya anda jangan memakai software ini kecuali anda mau mengubahnya menjadi 2 partisi dengan menggunakan software seperti Partition Magic.
Satu hal yang penting lagi, untuk pengisian password, anda jangan sampai lupa password anda karena akan berakibat fatal bagi anda karena tidak dapat mengubah setting dari Deep Freeze dan bahkan tidak dapat meng-uninstallnya. Ada software yang bernama XDeepFreeze dapat mengatasi hal ini tapi software ini kadang-kadang dapat merusak sistem OS anda.
Deep Freeze sangat cocok untuk komputer yang biasanya fungsinya cuma untuk menjalankan software yang sifatnya rutin dan jarang terjadi perubahan, seperti:
1. Komputer yang ditaruh di tempat umum dan bisa diakses oleh beberapa orang seperti komputer di sekolah, perpustakaan, bank, dan kantor pemerintah atau layanan publik
2. Komputer yang digunakan untuk rental seperti warnet dan game center
3. Komputer kerja di kantor atau di rumah yang sering akses ke internet dan install program buat testing saja setelah itu di uninstall
4. Komputer yang sering kena virus, yang pemakainya tidak mau ambil pusing tiap kali install atau format Windows
5. Server komputer yang biasanya dipakai untuk akses online atau internet
Deep Freeze sendiri membagi produknya menjadi beberapa jenis. Untuk kategori client dan server dan masing-masing terbagi lagi menjadi Deep Freeze Standard dan Deep Freeze Enterprise. Kalau anda untuk pemakaian di komputer rumah, kantor maupun warnet saja, sudah cukup anda memakai Deep Freeze Standard untuk client saja.
Tips Chating
Chatting tidak hanya populer kalangan remaja saja namun sekarang ini, sudah merambah kalangan dewasa bahkan orang tua sekalipun. Dengan chatting, kita bebas mengobrol apa saja mulai dari pekerjaan kantor, persahabatan, pelajaran sekolah, mata kuliah, percintaan & perjodohan, sampai dengan hal bersifat pribadi sekali pun. Saking bebasnya kadang-kadang membuat chatter-chatter kebablasan tanpa kontrol yang mungkin dapat membuat chatter lainnya marah dan tersinggung. Walaupun pada saat chatting, tidak terjadi tatap muka secara langsung, namun hal itu seharusnya tidak membuat para chatter meninggalkan etika ketimuran seperti dalam pergaulan pada umumnya. Sehubungan dengan etika dalam chatting, sudah banyak artikel di blog-blog, situs-situs, atau media lainnya yang mengulasnya, namun tidak ada salahnya untuk mengingatkan kembali akan pentingnya hal tersebut, maka pada TIPS DAN TRIK KOMPUTER kali ini akan memberikan tips tips dan etika yang ada hubungannya dengan chatting.
Sebenarnya kita semua sudah sepakat dan mengetahui etika chatting (walau pun tidak disebutkan secara tertulis), namun kita belum menyadari sepenuhnya untuk mempraktekkannya dengan benar. Nah, etika chatting tersebut antara lain, di bawah ini.
· Harus Sopan, siapa pun partner chatting kita, mengenalnya atau tidak, jangan sampai kita memperlakukan partner chatting dengan tidak sopan, seperti mengetikkan kata-kata porno atau kata-kata yang kasar atau tidak pantas lainnya.
· Jangan memaksakan kehendak, apapun alasan partner chatting sehingga dia tidak mau melayani percakapan dengan kita, kita harus menghormatinya dan tidak boleh memaksanya untuk menjawab atau meladeni percakapan kita.
· Harus Jujur, usahakan untuk menuliskan sesuatu apa pun dengan jujur (kecuali untuk hal-hal yang menyangkut privasi), karena hal ini akan membuat partner chatting kita percaya dan menghargai kita. Yakinlah bahwa sejelek atau seburuk apa pun, jika kita mengatakannya dengan jujur, orang lain akan menghargai kita dengan baik dan mengangkat topi untuk itu. Yang sering kita jumpai (bahkan saya sendiri) adalah sulit untuk mengatakan apa adanya, seperti umur, status, atau perkerjaan.
· Jangan suka mengganggu dan iseng, walaupun partner chatting keliatan online, belum tentu dia mempunyai waktu untuk melakukan chatting dengan kita, siapa tahu dia mempunyai pekerjaan yang memerlukan konsentrasi. Jika demikian, kita tidak boleh mengganggunya atau mengisenginya dengan mengetikkan “BUZZ” terus menerus.
· Jangan pernah membawa SARA, karena hal ini sangat sensitive yang dapat memicu perselisihan dan yakinlah hal ini tidak akan memberi manfaat apa-apa bagi kedua belah pihak.
· Ucapkan salam, tidak ada buruknya jika ucapan salam diterapkan pada saat chatting yang justru dapat menambah suasana keakraban. Pada setiap perjumpaan kita bisa mengetikkan selamat siang, halo, hi, atau senang bertemu Anda kembali, atau jika ingin mengakirinya, bisa mengetikkan selamat tinggal, bye, atau sampai ketemu lagi.
· Jangan menuliskan dengan HURUF BESAR (kapital) karena hal ini mengandung arti teriakan sehingga dapat membuat partner chatting marah atau tersinggung.
· Aktifkan status offline, hal ini dapat menjadi alternative jika Anda sedang sibuk dan tidak ingin “diganggu” chatter lain, dan ini sah-sah saja.
· Jangan terlalu banyak membuka dialog pada saat yang bersamaan, jika Anda tidak ingin dikatakan tidak serius oleh partner chatting Anda, karena harus melayani banyak dialog dengan yang lain. Selain itu, jika sembari menyelesaikan tugas pekerjaan, maka akan sangat mengganggu kelancaran pekerjaan Anda tersebut.
· Jangan lupa minta izin kepada partner chatting, pada saat kita ingin meninggalkan komputer, siapa tahu dia sedang menunggu jawaban dari kita.
· Jika Anda salah masuk room dengan tema yang tidak Anda sukai, jangan sekali-sekali membelokkan tema obrolan sesuai keinginan Anda, kecuali Anda sudah mendapat mandat dari chatter lainnya. Atau lebih baik Anda keluar dari room tersebut.
Selain etika chatting yang telah disebutkan di atas, ada tips chatting lain yang mungkin perlu kita ketahui adalah, antara lain seperti di bawah ini.
· Gunakanlah nickname yang baik dan sopan.
· Jangan menggunakan nama asli sebagai nickname Anda.
· Jangan pernah memberikan alamat dan nomor telepon kepada chatter yang belum Anda kenal sama sekali.
· Jika Anda menggunakan webcam, jangan sembarangan memberi izin kepada chatter yang tidak Anda kenal.
· Jika ingin memview webcam dari partner chatter, harus meminta izin dengan baik-baik kepadanya, kalau pun tidak diizinkan Anda harus menghormatinya.
· Jika harus melakukan copy darat, pastikan Anda tidak sendirian, hal ini untuk menghindari hal-hal yang tidak diinginkan.
· Jangan pernah melayani chatter yang menggunakan kata-kata kasar atau tidak sopan.
